15. Shakyamuni Buddha With Scenes Of His Former Lives Tangka – Tibet, around 1600, 71 x 48 cm. The British Museum has many artifacts that are not on display, like this one. Seated slightly higher than midway, Shakyamuni Buddha is shown in his normal earth witness mudra. Starting at the top left corner are ten of his former lives, or jatakas: Skuddabodhi, Mahahamsa, Mahabodhi, Great Ape, Skarabha Deer, Ruru Deer, Monkey King, Kshantivada, Brahma, and White Elephant.
